What is in organic fertilizer?
All fertilizers contain three essential nutrients to plant growth: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. While these nutrients can be synthesized, they can all be found in their natural form in soils.
Nitrogen: As the organic matter microbial decay cycle takes place, it releases nitrogen into the soil, which helps keep turf green and assists in plant productivity. Good natural sources of nitrogen for fertilizer can be found in yard waste, human biosolids, animal manure, and blood meal.
Phosphorus: Present in all living cells, phosphorus is absorbed through the roots of plants to help convert sunlight and other nutrients into food. Animal manure and bone meal (usually made from the pulverized bones of cows) are popular organic forms of phosphorus. Phosphorus can aid in root development (especially at time of seeding), creating a sustainable future for those turf plants for years to come.
Potassium: One of the most abundant elements available, potassium is imperative to overall plant growth. Organically, it is most often found in wood ash, the stalks of dead or rotting plants, and in the blood meal, muscles, skin, and organs of mammals. Potassium assists in disease resistance and cell wall structure of turf; increasing density of the plant to fight against all weather elements, insect pressure, and common lawn diseases.

Organic fertilizer is vital in not only feeding your plants but also building soil profiles. This provides long-term benefits and solutions for your lawn. Our organics that are incorporated into our programs are thoroughly thought through and implemented strategically. Most of our organics are from composted chicken litter, and due to the slow nature of breakdown, this source of fertilizer feeds the soil and turf for weeks to come. It decreases run-off due to the slow process of breakdown, and you get the product you’ve paid for instead of flushing it into storm drains. It minimizes the volatility of disease pressure and excess growth because it doesn’t release like a synthetic quick release fertilizer. A majority of synthetics merely falsify a feeding, and trick the plant into thinking it is being fed wholesome nutrients, when in reality it isn’t.
Organic matter nurtures a plant’s growth by promoting healthy root development. Soil microbes help convert organic fertilizers into soluble nutrients that the plant absorbs as food. It provides secondary and micronutrients your plants need for survival. While it typically contains less nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium than chemical-based fertilizer, it feeds plants for a longer period of time. While organic fertilizer takes longer to work, it yields long-term rewards.
Organic materials stimulate beneficial soil microorganisms and improve the structure of the soil, giving it a loose, airy consistency and allowing it to hold more moisture and nutrients. If soil is fed only with chemical based synthetics, it’s structure deteriorates after time, which causes it to lose its organic matter and microbiotic activity. It’s less capable of holding water and nutrients, resulting in the need to be fed more frequently. While synthetics most definitely have their place, it isn’t necessary to apply them to every situation.
